Illinois Nurses Association Endorses Susana Mendoza for Mayor

Sixth labor group to back Susana Mendoza for Mayor, citing her record for standing up to Rauner

CHICAGO, IL – The Illinois Nurses Association (INA) today endorsed Susana Mendoza for Chicago mayor and praised her record of standing up for workers.

Representatives from other labor organizations that have endorsed Mendoza also joined, including United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1546, Chicago Federation of Musicians, Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) Chicago Laborers’ District Council, LIUNA International and Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters.

“I’ve been proud to stand up for all the nurses and working people in Chicago and our state these last few years, as Illinois went through its worst financial crisis,” Susana Mendoza said. “While I stood up to Bruce Rauner, his transition chairman Bill Daley remained silent. Bill Daley wrote the governor’s blueprint to attack workers. Why would we ever put Gov. Rauner’s transition leader in charge of our city?”

“The INA’s political arm proudly endorses Susana Mendoza for mayor,” INA Executive Director Alice Johnson said. “She is ready to advocate on the issues that matter most to nurses in Chicago, improving public health, stabilizing the pension system and protecting vital healthcare services. In addition, she is ready to not only put a moratorium on closing the important programs provided by the Chicago Department of Public Health that serve our city’s most vulnerable, but to expand those important services. Susana did not hesitate to stand up for nurses and patients when Bruce Rauner tried to layoff more than 124 correctional nurses in 2017. We believe her courage and tenacity will serve Chicago well.”
