Susana Mendoza Releases Plan to Increase Equality, Support LGBTQ+ Community

CHICAGO, IL – Susana Mendoza (pronouns she/her/hers), candidate for mayor, today released her plan that will increase equality and support all members of the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ Americans face high rates of discrimination, poverty and other factors that impact their quality of life. The plan continues Mendoza’s long-standing support of the LGBTQ+ community. For decades, she has been on the front lines for equality, even at times when it may have been politically difficult.

Still today, queer youth experience higher rates of suicide and homelessness. Seniors in the LGBTQ+ community are often forced to go back into the closet in nursing homes and elder care housing. And transgender people, especially trans women of color, face unacceptable rates of violence and discrimination. Mendoza’s plan addresses these challenges and others with specific efforts. Among her plan’s goal are:

  • Ending HIV by supporting the Getting to Zero campaign;
  • Hiring LGBTQ+ individuals within government and support LGBTQ+ business owners;
  • Implementing police training and guidelines for treating LGBTQ+ individuals, focusing efforts to solve hate crimes;
  • Creating solutions tailored to the needs of homeless LGBTQ+ youth; and
  • Increasing LGBTQ+ mentorship and representation in schools and expand Gay Straight Alliance groups in high schools.

“The fight for equality is not over,” Susana Mendoza said. “The big issues that Chicagoans face – healthcare access, safety, economic equity and civil rights – can have an even greater impact on the LGBTQ+ community. As mayor, I will work every day to build a future that supports members of the LGBTQ+ community and that includes everyone.”

Susana was recognized for her work with endorsements from Equality Illinois in 2018 and 2016, and as mayor, she will continue standing side-by-side with the LGBTQ+ community, as we attempt to build upon the gains of recent years.
